The Pitch: A teenage girl in early 20th century China decides to become the fourth mistress to a wealthy man, and soon becomes embroiled in a world of domestic politics more dangerous than she first realized. The sadness of this movie contrasts with the stunning beauty of its music and cinematography, making it one of the best collaborations between director Zhang Yimou and actress Gong Li.
