How do you open the worst movies pitch ever?
“If bullshit had a birthplace, it would be Marienbad”
“If you look up the word pretentious in a dictionary, you see an image of Last Year at Marienbad”
“The screenplay resulted from some notes Camus wrote on a bender, realizing how dumb it was when slobbering up (like your Pets only Restaurant idea)…”
Yeah, let’s face it. With “Hiroshima mon Amour” Resnais still could have made the excuse of it all being a poetic excursion about collective trauma after the first (and as far only) two atomic bombs that were dropped.
Last Year at Marienbad lacks such an excuse.
The whole thing feels like a fever Dream a painter once had where the mystery is the bait and every attempt of resolving it is a lost cause, because it never made much sense to begin with.
There sure are themes in there about the patriarchy, power plays and exploitation of women.
It’s in all means a progressive movie, pointing the fingers at inconvenient truths.
But none of that makes me believe for even one second that anyone involved in it could have delievered any clarification on the mystery surrounding that almost non existent plot
With all of that out of the way, Last Year at Marienbad is one of my favorite movies of all time.
It might be the single greatest art exhibition I’ve ever layed my eyes upon. Every still is a carefully curated piece of art. You’ll hear the most beautiful voices in the most beautiful accents talking in a rather slow French, adding another layer of aesthetics too it.
Last year at Marienbad is aesthetic perfection. Every Frame, every sound, every cut… Just everything in this film goes together so well that it becomes unimportant that its plot is still not more than poetic bullshit.
