Here for The Drama

Thoughts by Nasha Foster

When I first came out of The Drama I wasn’t sure if I liked it. Initially I felt that some of the performances could have been stronger, some chemistry felt off, some lines felt a little flat. But as I talked about the film with other people and kept dissecting it on my own, my appreciation for the film grew.

If I had to describe the film in one word I would say “awkward.” Like yes, it may seem obvious to describe The Drama as awkward because it’s called The Drama. But this is NOT your typical wedding drama.

The most awkward part about The Drama for me was how it put me in Charlie’s shoes. All of us watching the film are Charlie. We’re getting new information at the same time as Charlie. We all want more backstory from Emma. We start to connect with Emma’s past and start to feel defensive of her character. We want Rachel to be the worst (but let’s be honest, Mike is actually the worst). We, the audience, become part of the drama.

The film really made me question my own bias, where I draw my own lines. And let’s face it – when the film posed the question “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?” we all asked ourselves that question too.

The Drama is awkward, but by the end, there’s something cathartic about it too.
